  Chapter 1

Katie was exhilarated. She had never been on a real vacation in her young life.

When she casually admitted this to Nick, he’d seemed surprised. Her offhand admission came one night in mid-November. Katie had settled into her new life in the country with the former soldier. Nick was handsome and strong, and he had promised to take care of Katie.

Raised by a frazzled single mother who had struggled to keep herself and her daughter fed and off the streets, Katie had spent most of her twenty years taking care of herself. Nick had found Katie surviving on her own, sleeping on a friend’s couch in a building that should have been condemned. She was slinging drinks from dusk to dawn, half-dressed, in a dive bar. Barely out of her teens, Katie and her friend had lied about their birthdates to get hired.

Nick was more than twice her age and capable of handling a wild child who had been bouncing around like the ball in a pinball machine. No direction. No protection as she was slammed back and forth by forces that were out of her control.

When Katie first met her future guardian and lover, she was immediately captivated. His bright green eyes seemed to easily see through the façade she was working so hard to build. She was trying to convince herself and the world that she was a strong, independent adult who had her life under control. Nick saw through her charade. He was a grown man with his own painful past and he immediately sensed the despair beneath the surface.

The first time he saw her dark brown eyes, he recognized the panic. He did not see a confident, grown woman in control of her own life. When he first met Katie, Nick found a scared young girl just out of her teens. Her tiny shorts barely covered her little butt. The skintight tee shirt stretched across her chest was cut to reveal her stomach. “Jimmy D’s Bar Wench” was written in fading print over the image of a blond with a huge chest and big red lips smiling suggestively while holding a beer mug.

To the factory guys and bikers who spent their nights boozing and trying to get their hands on the waitresses, Katie was a hot, sexy fantasy. Nick saw a lost and lonely kid, exhausted from trying to survive on her own and in desperate need of a reliable man who would love and care for her with no strings attached.

Nick gave Katie a new life in a world she thought only existed in sappy movies and fairy tales. It turned out that for Katie, the fairy tale was real. She was Red Riding Hood wandering alone in woods that she’d had no business entering. Beset by wolves in men’s clothing, Katie was suddenly and unexpectedly rescued by her own personal woodsman. To the younger woman, Nick seemed strong and fearless. It was as if he had tossed Katie over his shoulder like a wayward child and carried her to safety.

Once her physical needs were met and his girl was cleaned up and fed, Nick taught Katie a hard lesson about what happens to reckless girls who make unsafe choices. She spent the first night of her new life in a warm, soft bed in a room on the second floor of a beautiful farmhouse. Nick had renovated the property himself on a sprawling horse farm he called Rolling Hills. As Nick had sternly promised when he led Katie away from her former life, the younger woman had fallen asleep that first night on her tummy. Despite her tear-streaked face and red, hot fanny, Katie slept soundly and peacefully for the first time in months.

Ignoring the expected loud angry protests, the older man had scolded Katie for her reckless behavior before taking her over his knee and giving her the old-fashioned spanking that she deserved and needed.

Katie was first shocked, and then horrified to end the night with her shorts and panties down around her knees. The younger woman kicked and howled in useless protest as the man who had just rescued her, scorched her bare bottom.

Confident she had learned her lesson and was truly sorry for her bad choices, Nick wrapped Katie in his arms, holding her while she sobbed out apologies and promises to be good. That night she drifted off to sleep while the man she already adored gently rubbed her back.

For the first time in her young life, Katie felt truly loved and protected. She knew that with Nick by her side, the wolves could not reach her. Katie had nothing to fear.

Katie had been with Nick for more than a year. Her first Christmas on the farm had been like a whirlwind. To a girl who’d spent her whole life, up to that point, living in a small apartment in the city, a traditional country Christmas was like something she had only seen in movies. It was her first time with a real tree and presents and sprinkle-covered cookies. Katie had soaked in every single minute.

Nick’s housekeeper Holly had teased Katie about her obsession with all things Christmas. The older woman playfully chided that Katie was worse than a six-year-old who starts writing her Christmas list the day after New Year’s.

Truthfully, Holly enjoyed watching Katie’s excitement for the holiday season. She’d never had any children of her own and had become like a surrogate mother to the younger girl. Like Nick, the older woman could see the vulnerability beneath the surface. Since the death of her husband, the holidays were difficult for Holly. Having an excited young girl in the house reignited her own Christmas spirit.

The fall season had been difficult for Katie. Skeletons from her past had unexpectedly resurfaced, causing tension between her and Nick. Katie tended to be impulsive and reckless when she felt her world spinning out of control. She could also be stubborn and sassy. On more than one occasion Katie’s outbursts ended with the younger woman facing the corner and rubbing a sore bottom.

Eventually, Katie’s family drama was sorted out - thanks to the intervention of her guardian lover. She was once again looking forward to spending the holidays with Nick and his extended family of friends. Nick’s parents had died in an accident, and he had no siblings. He jokingly referred to his few close friends and the ragtag group of workers he employed at Rolling Hills as his ‘simulated family.’ Katie loved them all and they looked out for her as if she were an impetuous little sister.

Katie was surprised when Nick first suggested they spend the week before Christmas at a fancy hotel in New York City. She was looking forward to repeating last year’s holiday traditions and hesitant to leave her winter wonderland in the country. Nick had reassured his girl that it would be a great adventure and an opportunity for them to be alone together, away from his daily grind on the farm. The getaway would also celebrate Katie completing her first semester at the community college. Nick promised that they would be home before Christmas, joking that Katie would have plenty of time to resume her role as Christmas elf in overdrive.

Katie eventually warmed up to the idea. She had never been on a plane or stay
ed in a real hotel, and she had wanted to see New York City since she was a little girl. When the night before their flight finally arrived, Katie was a bundle of energy. With her bags packed, Katie began working on a list of things she wanted to do in the city.

Nick made a show of groaning at the prospect of ice skating in Central Park and shopping in Times Square. But on the inside, he was relieved to see Katie once again happy and excited. He winked at his girl after she pouted over his lack of enthusiasm for visiting Chinatown and Planet Hollywood. He pulled the younger woman into his lap and kissed her temple holding his lips against her head as she leaned into his strong embrace. “Don’t worry, sweetheart,” he reassured his girl, “We can do whatever you want in the city.”

Katie’s Christmas adventure in the city started out like a dream. Nick’s business partner Steve had driven them to the airport in his truck. When their flight arrived in New York they were greeted by a tall man in a dark suit holding a sign with Nick’s last name. He had arranged for a car to pick them up at the airport and drive them to their hotel. Katie felt like a movie star. She was beaming as Nick took her hand and led her through the crowded airport to a black car waiting outside. It was cold, and dirty snow piled up on the edges of the city streets, but Katie could not have been more elated. When the driver opened her door and she stepped out onto the bustling street outside their imposing hotel, she felt like a princess.

Katie had never experienced anything like this hotel. Her mother sometimes got part-time waitressing work at hotels back home, but she had always been a worker’s kid, never the person stepping out of the fancy car. Now there were men carrying her bags and holding doors for her to enter. Nick was at her side, as always, watching to see that his girl was happy, and close by to intervene at the first sign of a problem.

When they stepped into the lobby of the hotel, Katie had to stop herself from gasping in awe. It was huge, with ceilings so high that she briefly wondered how any cleaner could reach them. The floors were gleaming white, and the centerpiece was a giant marble staircase that opened wide at the top inviting guests to the banquet and ballrooms on the second floor. Above her head was a sparkling glass chandelier. Every railing, desk, counter and column in the immense lobby was adorned with dark evergreen boughs and twinkling white lights. Katie felt as if she had entered another world. She reached out to clasp the hand of the man she adored and wondered once again what she had ever done to get so lucky.

After Nick had checked them in and retrieved their key cards, a young man in a black and gold uniform led the way to their suite on the twentieth floor. Katie had tried to pull herself together after her initial reaction to the lobby, so as not to act like a clueless country girl, but she almost lost it when she saw the suite. When Nick first talked about this adventure in the city, Katie had envisioned a nice room with a big bed and flat screen TV. She expected a fancy bathroom and maybe a kitchenette with a refrigerator and microwave. She was completely unprepared for what she saw when the bellhop opened their door.

Katie finally understood what it meant to be speechless. She stepped into a room that was at least twice the size of the apartment where she’d crashed with her friends, before moving to Rolling Hills. What first caught her attention was the wall-sized window which offered an expansive view of the city. She immediately crossed the room to look out and down on the beautiful, bustling city below. It was only mid-afternoon when they arrived at the hotel, and she couldn’t wait to look out this giant window to see the glistening city after dark. The bedroom complete with a king-sized bed, walk-in closet and attached bathroom was equally impressive. While she did not expect to be doing any cooking on this trip, there was a complete kitchen with a granite breakfast bar and adjacent dining area, in the unlikely event she and Nick decided to host a pre-Christmas dinner party. If the rest of this vacation in the city was anything like their arrival at the hotel, Katie was confident that she was in for the adventure of a lifetime.

Nick had promised his girl a Christmas adventure, and as always, he did not disappoint. After settling into the suite, Katie and Nick spent the rest of the afternoon exploring the area around their hotel. Katie was enthralled with the over-the-top holiday decorations that lined the city streets and adorned every store window. In a small gift shop, she found a sparkling silver snow globe that depicted Christmas in the city and played ‘Silver Bells’ when she turned the small key on the base of the globe. Katie knew the minute she saw it on a shelf in the back of the store that it would be the perfect gift for Holly. Once the delicate globe was encased in tissue and packed in a small shopping bag, Nick held Katie’s petite, mitten-covered fingers wrapped in his own strong hand as they walked together back to the hotel.

When they arrived back at their suite, Katie busied herself watching old Christmas movies on the giant screen in their bedroom and enjoying snacks from the fully stocked minibar, while Nick called Rolling Hills to discuss some business that the younger woman completely tuned out. When he finally ended the call and came looking for Katie, the older man stopped to lean against the doorway with his arms folded in mock disapproval at the sight of his girl filling up on junk food before dinner.

Trying and failing miserably to keep his expression serious, Nick could not hide the grin that spread across his face. He loved this silly, beautiful girl who was currently surrounded by candy wrappers and empty soda cans as she sat cross-legged in the center of the milky white covers on the giant bed. Her long dark hair was up in a messy ponytail, and her beautiful brown eyes were fixed on the flat screen mounted above the fireplace. When he cleared his throat to get her attention, Katie turned to see the man she loved entering the room.

Nick stood in front of the younger woman, blocking her view of the television and shaking his head. “Katie,” he started, picking up a handful of wrappers and holding them up for her to see. “What on Earth are you doing?”

“What?” she asked as she craned her neck in a failed attempt to see around her guardian and lover.

Sighing in exasperation at her lack of focus, Nick took the remote he saw half-buried in the rumpled covers and turned off the television, immediately gaining his girl’s full attention.

“Nick!” she whined, trying to grab for the remote. “I was watching that.”

The older man tossed the remote onto a chair next to the bed, and gently but firmly took Katie’s chin in his hand to settle and focus her attention. “I realize you were watching the TV. And now I want you watching me.” Nick gave her the ‘I mean business’ look that Katie had learned not to ignore. “Why are you binge eating all of this junk when you know we have dinner reservations in an hour?”

Doing her best to come off as the injured party, Katie quickly responded. “I was starving to death. And you ditched me in here by myself so you could talk on the phone. What did you expect me to do?”

Nick was unfazed by the drama. “Well, young lady,” he began. “I didn’t expect you to eat a pound of candy.”

Katie looked around at the wrappers scattered across the bed. “Sorry,” she replied trying to look remorseful, knowing that she didn’t want to start an argument over candy. “I guess I didn’t notice how much I was eating.”

Nick shook his head, unable to stay annoyed with this girl he loved. “I don’t want you to give yourself a bellyache, honey. You know better than to eat all this junk at once.” He moved his hand to tuck the loose hair back behind her ear.

“I won’t get sick,” she said, looking confident.

“Uh, huh,” Nick replied, looking skeptical. “I’ve heard that before.”

Katie made a move to get off the huge bed without sinking back into the soft mattress. Trying to push herself up, she squealed when a half-empty can of Diet Coke that she had balanced on a small tray tipped over, spilling her soda. Nick was able to quickly grab the tray and remove it from the bed before the dark liquid stained the bright white blanket covering the bed or spilled over onto the clearly expensive white rug. “Oops,” she sa
id, looking nervous. “Sorry.”

This time Nick was annoyed for real. Holding the wet tray in one hand, he reached out to steady the younger girl as she made her way awkwardly out of the bed. Nick gave his impetuous girl a stern look as he shook his head and carried the tray into the kitchen where he rinsed and left it to dry on the counter.

Returning to the bedroom, he found Katie squirming as she looked down at the white carpet. As usual, the older man’s heart melted at the sight of the girl he loved fretting that she might be in trouble. Wanting more than anything to laugh and take her into his arms, Nick had to stop and remind himself that he needed to be the responsible adult in the room. “Katie, you need to use your head,” he lectured. “This furniture is expensive, and you are not going to behave like a spoiled little girl who has no respect for things that don’t belong to you.”

“I’m sorry, Nick. It was an accident,” she replied. Silence hung in the air for several seconds before Katie asked softly, “Are you going to spank me?”

“Do you think you deserve a spanking?” Nick questioned.

“It was an accident. I promise I’ll be more careful,” Katie pleaded with her best puppy eyes.

“That doesn’t answer my question, now does it, sweetheart?” Nick said shaking his head. Watching his wild child unconsciously covering her pajama clad bottom, he could not bring himself to ruin her first night in the city, even if she did deserve to have her little butt warmed.

“I’m sorry, Nick. Really,” she repeated looking pitiful.

Crossing the room, the man she needed more than anything in the world, sat on the edge of the bed and pulled Katie over to sit sideways in his lap. Wrapping his strong arm around her shoulder, Nick pulled her close and quickly kissed her temple before leaning back to look her in the eye. “I’m going to give you a pass on this one because I know you are excited and it was an accident. You are very lucky that soda didn’t end up all over this fancy rug, or right now you would be across my knee, face down, getting a close-up look at the mess you made with your pants down around your ankles.” The older man paused to let that image sink into his girl’s head.
